Value Creation Examples

LightRiver

Contributing Source: 2023 ESG Report

Since 2006, LightRiver has promoted DEI through its Accelerated Certified Engineer (ACE) program, enhancing diversity within its workforce and senior management. The program trains recent STEM graduates in telecommunications through hands-on lab work and field experience with mentors. This initiative has produced seventy engineers, twenty-five co-ops, and twenty interns, with over 50% from historically underrepresented groups. LightRiver’s TIES awards program further supports diversity by donating to STEAM programs like Black Girls Code and the Boys and Girls' Club of Atlantic City’s STEM Lab, fostering the next generation of talent.

NWS

Contributing Source: 2023 ESG Report

NWS, a full-service materials and logistics provider for the wireless industry since 2012, exemplifies sustainability through its brand promise. In 2022, they engaged an ESG consultant to measure real-time carbon emissions and develop reduction strategies, resulting in the Wireless Sustainability Plan. NWS has made significant strides in sustainability by purchasing renewable energy credits to power 100% of their Scope 2 electricity emissions (~280 metric tons) and offsetting an additional 425 metric tons of CO2e through investments in wind power, landfill methane capture, and truck stop electrification projects. They are improving supply chain efficiency by streamlining shipments, reducing partial truckloads, and enhancing fleet efficiency by retiring company vehicles and replacing gas-powered forklifts with electric ones. Future plans include surveying suppliers about their ESG practices and exploring recycling options for hard-to-recycle materials like wooden reels used for telecom cables.

Grupo Conexão

Contributing Source: ESG Report 2022

Grupo Conexão is a large broadband operator in Brazil. In a region with limited recycling infrastructure, the company has a formal program for recycling and reusing waste from facilities and offices. It has adopted specific measures to ensure the proper disposal of cabling materials used in internet installations which ultimately reduces GHG emissions and landfill waste. At two facilities, the company recovers cables and hazardous products for co-processing purposes, reusing the solid industrial waste as a source of energy; and at others, fibers are incinerated. Its additional efforts to reduce consumption in offices include providing reusable cups to eliminate single-use plastic ones, which reduced waste by over 3 million disposable cups in a year; and the company actively recycles electronic waste. A week-long event it served as an e-waste collection point and donated materials to a local NGO (41.53 metric tons in 2021).
